U of M alumnus Yanni will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at UMAA's 2004 annual celebration.

Yanni Chryssomallis, U of M alumnus and renowned contemporary instrumental composer, will be the featured speaker at the University of Minnesota Alumni Association's (UMAA) 100th Anniversary Gala Finale and Annual Celebration on Thursday, May 6. At the event, Yanni will also receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters for his outstanding cultural contributions. In keeping with the evening's theme, "Changing the World One Graduate at a Time," Yanni will speak about his experiences at the University and how they influenced his life and career. He will also share a multimedia presentation highlighting his performances around the world. The evening's program will also include entertainment by University students. "Yanni is a perfect example of an alumnus who is changing the world through his music and his 'one world, one people' philosophy," says Margaret Carlson, UMAA executive director. "He is a rare artist, whose unique music defies borders and boundaries and speaks to people of all races and nations." Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. with a reception and international dinner on Northrop Mall, followed by the program at 8 p.m. in Northrop Auditorium. Yanni was born in Kalamata, Greece, in 1954. He enrolled at the University of Minnesota in 1972 and graduated with a bachelor of arts in psychology in 1976. His brother and sister also attended the University. In his bestselling book, Yanni in Words, he talks about his experiences at the U of M, including his job at the Campus Club. Tickets for UMAA's 100th anniversary gala are $49 for UMAA members and $64 for non-members (dinner and program) or $24 for members, $29 for non-members, and $14 for current U students (program only).
