Ribbons remembering three students who died in a nearby house fire flutter from a river birch planted in their honor.
Planting a tree in remembrance
Representatives of the University of Minnesota, the Southeast Como neighborhood, and the Minnesota Student Association gathered on Thursday, April 22, in Van Cleve Park in Minneapolis to plant a river birch in memory of Elizabeth Wencl, Amanda Speckien, and Brian Heiden, all second-year University students who died September 22, 2003, in a nearby house fire.
Speakers at the event included Joan Menken, of the Southeast Como Improvement Association; Tom Zearly, Minnesota Student Association; University of Minnesota President Robert Bruininks; Walt Dziedzic, Minneapolis Park; and Recreation Board and Paul Zerby, Minneapolis City Council.
The tree planting was in conjunction with Beautiful U Day, the University's annual beautification project, and the nationwide celebration, Earth Day.
