Kerry to visit U on Friday

Published on June 2, 2004

Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's campaign will come to the University of Minnesota on Friday, June 4, with a rally scheduled at the Sports Pavilion on the Twin Cities campus at noon.

According to the Minnesota DFL, the event will focus on America's veterans and will launch the campaign's national veterans outreach effort. Guests will include Sen. Max Cleland (D-Ga.) as well as a number of Kerry's crewmates from his days in the Vietnam War. The visit is cosponsored by U-DFL, the University's student Democrat organization.

"We've wanted something like this to happen for a long time," says Austin Miller, president of U-DFL. "He came to Macalester [College] around caucus time, and we thought, 'Why not come to the University of Minnesota? It's big, there's a lot of people, and it'd be a great atmosphere.'"

The event is free, but tickets are required for admittance. They can be picked up at the U-DFL office in Room 226B, Coffman Memorial Union. Doors to the Sports Pavilion, located at 1925 University Ave. S.E. in Minneapolis, will open at 10 a.m.

Governor Tim Pawlenty will also be on campus on June 4. Pawlenty will headline the Policy Forum Breakfast Club at the University's Humphrey Institute from 7 to 8:15 a.m.
