Crookston campus now offers first University of Minnesota online degree

Published on November 24, 2004

The University of Minnesota, Crookston's Bachelor of Applied Health (BAH) has become the first degree program to be available online at the University of Minnesota. The BAH degree is designed for allied health personnel who seek professional advancement, and will provide a convenient and flexible alternative for working adults and part-time students with relevant work experience and an interest in completing a four-year degree. The degree incorporates practical skills and builds on associate degrees in the health care fields.

According to David Seyfried, UMC health management program director, the degree will meet the needs of working health care professionals by enabling them to continue their work and family obligations. "The flexibility of online courses allows health care professionals working rotating shifts to pursue an advanced degree," he says. "This was previously impossible even with evening or weekend class times."

The four-year baccalaureate degree program was developed in collaboration with area two-year institutions, several regional health care facilities, and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.

The curriculum responds to practical concerns expressed by health care employers for a new kind of graduate, one who possesses strong clinical skills and the leadership abilities necessary to perform successfully in the changing health care arena. It is practitioner focused, with basic foundation courses and clinical coursework completed at a technical or community college, the University, and the workplace.
